Sewing Together
Are the outfits from H&M ours National Europeans outfits?
M&M Tailor Studio – action on the ferry between Karlskrona and Gdynia was a part of “Neighbors” project. Autumn 2007
In the past it was easy to tell from where you are, who you are – Polish, German, etc. people could express it also by the outfit they were wearing. To day in Europe we all look the same….and what is more we are more and more mixed, (mixed marriage and because of work emigration , cheep flights.
The H&M company which is making a global design – for everybody means for nobody. It looks like that The Sweden is giving the designs of the outfit than it is send to Asia and close and far East. The thousands of mass workers without the name are producing the outfits for the mass of people in Europe and US, without the difference for the country and identity. There is no personal individual need and expectation in this. You never meet the person which make the outfit for you because actually there is no only one person….. They create sometimes cripple outfits because the workers are in hurry or just tired. And then the same looking dress or trousers are sending to all H&M shops in all Europe,The same in Lubliana, Krakow, Moscow and Helsinki. Then you can meet the person from (you think differed culture) wearing the same plover as you-it happens to me twice in Slovenia and Finland. Is it mean that now we are all Europeans? We can not identify with our nations by outfit any more….we also can’t identify with ourselves by the outfits we buy in stores… And the even worst is when the size is just 34, 36, 38 etc, there is noting in between. I call that outfit the „bags for human”, it was not made for you, it was made for the size 36, but who is it size 36?
I use to fit the outfit by myself to my body after I get from the store. So my idea on the ferry trip was to organize in the cabin the tailor studio where people can come and choose one item (from H&M) and then I will fit it to their body.
Drowsiness. Tracks of presence
Installation in cabins. Embroidery on fabric, 2006
What is left of a human being after she has left her bed? A movement, some warmth, a bodily presence? One wonders what has happened before and what will happen next when you see the embroidered bodies, all installed as bedspreads in some cabins. When lying down on a bed on the ferry one can’t stop imagining all the people that has slept, made love, cried, dressed up their party clothes, laughed or discussed on these beds. All with expectations and ideas about the trip. Why has she crawled together like a child? Why do they, almost invisible in white thread, turn their back to one another when at the same time another couple are enclosed in warm red thick cocoon? Where are they now?
