I asked the citizens of Cleveland to make a small yarn balls with me (some of them were made of glass). During the opening the rope which keep the construction of the work was cut.
Sometimes I feel that I fall apart, crumbling into pieces; atoms, elements of the material and nonmaterial world, seconds, minutes, hours, days. We construct ourselves from memories, experiences, and elements that we experience through other people. We struggle to survive, trying to keep all it together as a whole. We want to have something constant, but then suddenly our fragile and mysterious constructions crumble into pieces. The intensity and sound of falling into parts varies. Crying can be very soft, tears can drop quietly, and screams can hurt our ears. We can not be sure of anything except that we will die. There is nothing constant that is good.
After crumbling we try to collect all of the pieces again and again. It is very strenuous work, but it might improve us.
I asked people to give me the yarn that they either didn’t need, or just wanted to give me. I asked them for their time, so they became a part of my experience in creating the work. Experiences are built together, through daily contact, and through time spent together. Each person made at least one ball of yarn for my work, which is a part of my life of creation. Now it is our creation.
Contemporary art might be seen as something that is hard to understand, but I hope my work allowed people to get closer to it. I wanted people to understand that art is a part of our life; you only have to notice it.
