EU countries outfit design

Wearable Nations – European Outfits (2011) is a utopian project for a “national-folk”
costume for all Europeans developed by Markiewicz during her residency at Fabrikken. The idea comes from the observation that people in Europe wear the same outfits from the same global companies. Is it possible to design a ‘national’ costume without producing a replica of the ubiquitous old favourites: brightly coloured skirts, corsets, garlands, decorations and ribbons? Markiewicz wanted to come up with a novel design, and focused on the typography of the abbreviation ‘EU’, using the ‘E’ as the pattern for cutting the top, and the ‘U’ as the pattern for the trousers. The outfit will thus be identical for all Europeans, regardless of their gender.
