HOUSE. HOME. DOMESTICATION. HOUSE OPENING.

Małgorzata Markiewicz’s exhibition is a complex story aiming to answer the question of what a home is and where it is to be found.

The artists regards house/home not only as architecture or a sheltering cover, but also as habits, smells and human relationships. “Home” is a process, requiring continual transformations, corrections and changes. They sustain the movement creating the life of home, driven by the constant sense of disatissfaction and the need for improvement – a house is living as much as it is unfinished.

Markiewicz does not answer the questions she raises, Instead, she settles for a “house opening”, listening to others’ stories and the unending process of gathering overheard “recipes for a home”.

During the ‘house opening’, the artist will share sourdough and “recipes for a home” collected in her “cook book” with her guests. Traditionally, the gift of leaven is a symbolic gesture of endowing another person with life and positive energy. It is also a token of trust. Sourdough, after all, requires continual care and feeding, hungrily devouring the energy of the outside to consume it in the process of decomposition.

Sharing personal stories, just as the gift of leaven, is capable of enriching the process of house construction and maintenance, even if the experiences shared are bitter, nostalgic or ostensibly banal. The artist encourages the participants in the exhibition to share their “recipes for a home” and include them in her “cook book”.
