I crawl to make a living (2025)

I crawl to make a living,

but you think I’m joking

My efforts to climb the hill,

but you’re on top of the mountain

(Diana Adhiambo)

The tapestry was found on a street in Palermo last year, it was a disposal. I took it, clean it and work at the back side, which is not pale (front is very pale because of sunlight). I embroider the quote form Diana’s poem, and add the bold framing made of fruits nets which I kept collecting during during my residency at MuseumsQuartier Vienna. Thanks to all who help me to finish it! A fabric from Palermo, where the global North borders the global South. Fruit and boats carrying climate migrants sail from Africa to Europe. What is interesting, since I switched sides, all the faces instead of being white, became black.

The work was completed as part of a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
