A Cookbook with Home Metaphors

The book is the result of a study “Organising Discourse” that Markiewicz completed in Stockholm’s Konstfack, Sweden, in conjunction with her phd studies at ASP (The Academy of Fine Arts) in Cracow, Poland, in 2016.

The prototype of the book was a hand-made table cloth, cut and stitched to form many pockets and hidden nooks, that became the basis for the printed version.

The publication contains a collection of numerous home recipes, donated by the students and the artist’s friends, together with quotes by different philosophers and writers. The artist’s own ideas and artworks, referencing different aspects of home and domesticity, and addressing different contexts, are intertwined within the recipes.

There is no one answer to “where home is” therefore the form of the book that Markiewicz adopted is that of an open, expanding cook book that invites people to add their own stories or recipes. This solution is also an attempt to tackle a paradox of writing a phd thesis or to define a theory through a prism of a practicing artist. Markiewicz attempted, in a creative way, to tackle the question of how the topic determines the form of the writing.

In her thesis, as well as in the cook book, the artist intended to juxtapose the individual with the universal, and to suggest that through respecting the humble and the fragile leads to understanding the big and the universally significant.
