Women’s Curtain 2023

Two years ago, the director of the Słowacki Theater, Krzysztof Głuchowski, invited me to design and make a textile curtain to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Theater. We called it Curtain of Women because it was made by women and is dedicated to 130 women important to Krakow. The curtain was hand-woven using the double-warp fabric technique by two weavers, Mrs. Bernarda Rość and Mrs. Lucyna Kędzierska from Podlasie. It is the largest, most monumental implementation of this technique in the world (12 meters wide, 10 meters high). The whole thing was hand-sewn from 16 elements. Additionally, the curtain is decorated with 58 figures hand-embroidered by me and 35 other women. Including embroiderers from the Lud-Art association in Krakow and several volunteers.

It is a her-storical, intergenerational project (the youngest embroiderer is 11 and the oldest is 88 years old). It is decorated with the head of Medusa, which is a symbol of women’s strength.
