She sets sail, but in same time stays connected with a land. The end the thread is attached to the shore. She floats away, sways on the waves, gently pushed with a wind.

If she wants to come back, she needs to make an effort. Instead of oaring,  she crochets. She makes up yarn, which connects her with the land. It brings her closer and closer to the shore. Creating textile she comes back home.

If she is willing to float again, pushed gently with a wind and waves, she needs to rip her work. The end of the textile’s thread stays attached to the shore. It gives her possibility to come back, if she only wants to.

On and on again… till the day when she will let the thread go… she won’t come back…

The fairy tale can be approach differently…

Land – home can be perceive as a good thing, the place that is left or adventure or work but where we are happy to come back. Therefore one, in order to not lose this opportunity, wants always to be connected with symbolic thread. In the act of floating away one rips up textile and is losing what have managed to create and had while being on land.

Land – home also can be a place of oppression from where one wants to run away, but somehow is not able (kids, shared loan, codependency of violence). Floating away woman (or man) is released gradually ripping the evil heritage.

Driven by the hope of change one is repeating the attempt of return.

But there is a tempting opportunity to release by leaving the end of the thread and sail away. Perhaps somewhere there is waiting another free thread…The fairy tale says a bit about the Sisyphus, Odysseus and Penelope. And Ariadne as well. A little about domestic violence, imprisonment in relationship and a bit of exile and longing.

Kopanka – Krakow, Krakow – Kopanka – action on a ferry

Ferry connects two river banks, Krakow – city and Kopanka – village. People “from the countryside” are going to Krakow every morning, to perform low-paid, invisible and under appreciated work. They embark at dawn – losing home or freed from it.

Because domestic violence is strongly present in the village, departure can be seen as symbolic act of liberation. Red scarf I am wearing at the beginning founded on the neck is warm but can also suffocate. Sailing ferry one freed from home (or lose it).
